3.5 GPA: percentage, letter grade & meaning
A 3.5 GPA sits halfway between a B and an A. Below: the percentage, the letter-grade range, and the grade combinations that produce it.
Letter ranges: B+ (87–89%) and A- (90–92%). The percentage is an estimate; schools differ.
How 3.5 compares with nearby GPAs
| GPA | Letter grade | Estimated % |
|---|---|---|
| 3.3 | B+ | ≈ 88% |
| 3.5 | B+ to A- | ≈ 89.5% |
| 3.6 | B+ to A- | ≈ 90.3% |
How we estimate the percentage
We estimate the percentage by interpolating between the two nearest anchor points: 3.3 GPA ≈ 88% and 3.7 GPA ≈ 91%.
88% + ((3.5 − 3.3) ÷ (3.7 − 3.3)) × (91% − 88%) ≈ 89.5%
Anchors are the midpoints of the common letter-grade ranges (for example, B+ is 87–89%, so 3.3 is anchored at 88%), except 4.0, which is set at 98% because it covers both A and A+. This is our own estimate, not an official conversion; your school's scale may differ. Some calculators simply divide the GPA by 4 and multiply by 100, which would put a 3.0 at 75%, a C on the ranges used here, so their numbers can differ from ours.
What a 3.5 GPA means
On the standard 4.0 scale, a 3.5 is exactly halfway between a B (3.0) and an A (4.0). In practice it is a mix of A and B grades: half your courses at A and half at B, or an even blend of A- (3.7) and B+ (3.3).
Because 3.5 does not match a single letter grade, schools do not agree on one percentage for it. Cutoffs differ, so treat any conversion, including the one on this page, as an estimate.
Grade combinations that give a 3.5
If every course has the same number of credits, two A's and two B's average exactly 3.5. So do four A's, one B and one C across six courses, which shows that a single C does not rule out a 3.5.
Real transcripts weight each grade by credits. An A in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than an A in a 1-credit seminar, so the same letters can give a slightly different result at your school.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
A 3.5 is generally considered a strong GPA: your record is mostly A's and B's. Whether it is enough depends on the goal, and the table above shows why. The same 3.5 meets the Dean's List line at several schools and sits exactly on the cum laude floor at others, but at a school that awards honors by class rank it falls well short. Always check the published rule for the specific school, program or scholarship you care about.
High school vs college
In college, a 3.5 is almost always on the plain 4.0 scale. In high school, a weighted GPA can go above 4.0 because honors and AP/IB courses add points, so a 3.5 weighted GPA can correspond to a lower unweighted GPA. Check which scale a school or application asks for. The GPA calculator on this site supports both.
What a 3.5 GPA means at real schools

| School | Dean's List | Graduation honors | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Arizona | Term GPA of 3.500–3.999 with at least 12 letter-graded credits (6 for half-time). A 4.000 earns Dean's List with Distinction. | Cum laude from 3.500, magna from 3.700, summa from 3.900, with at least 45 graded credits at the university. | |
| Texas A&M University–Central Texas | Term GPA of 3.5 to 3.99 with at least 12 letter-graded resident credits. A 4.0 term earns the President's Honor Roll. | Cum laude from 3.60, magna from 3.70, summa from 3.90, with at least 45 credits taken at the campus. | |
| Penn State | Semester GPA of 3.50 or higher; credit-load rules are set in Policy G-8. | No fixed GPA: the top 12% of each college's graduating class qualify (2% summa, 4% magna, 6% cum laude), with a 3.50 minimum and at least 60 credits at Penn State. For degrees conferred Fall 2025–Summer 2026, cum laude cutoffs ranged from 3.81 to 3.93 across colleges. | |
| University of Washington (Seattle) | Quarterly GPA of 3.50 or higher in at least 12 graded credits. | No fixed GPA: top 0.5% get summa, the next 3% magna, the next 6.5% cum laude, with cutoffs reset each year by college. In 2025–26 the cum laude cutoff in the College of Arts & Sciences was 3.91. | |
| Central Michigan University | Semester GPA of 3.50 or higher with at least 12 letter-graded CMU credits. A 4.00 semester earns a place on the President's List. | Cum laude at 3.50–3.74, magna at 3.75–3.89, summa at 3.90–4.00 cumulative, counting only letter-graded CMU credits. | |
| University of Southern California | USC Dornsife: semester GPA of 3.5 or higher with at least 12 letter-graded units. | Cum laude at 3.5, magna at 3.7, summa at 3.9 overall GPA; the lower of the residence and combined GPA is used. | |
| University of Michigan–Dearborn | Term GPA of 3.50 or higher, with a minimum graded-credit load (see the catalog page). | Only two tiers: a cumulative GPA of 3.5–3.79 is recommended for "With Distinction", and 3.8 or higher for "With High Distinction". |
A sample semester that adds up to 3.5
Here is one way a 16-credit semester works out to exactly a 3.5. The course names are only examples; your own credits and grades will differ.
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade points | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus I | 4 | A | 4.0 | 16.0 |
| General Chemistry I (with lab) | 4 | B | 3.0 | 12.0 |
| Biology I (with lab) | 4 | A | 4.0 | 16.0 |
| First-Year Seminar | 2 | B | 3.0 | 6.0 |
| Fitness and Wellness | 2 | B | 3.0 | 6.0 |
| Total | 16 | 56.0 |
GPA = 56.0 ÷ 16 = 3.50
What one more term could do to a 3.5
Assume you have 60 credits completed at a 3.5 GPA and add 15 new credits. Your cumulative GPA would become:
| Next 15 credits | New cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| All A's (4.0) | 3.60 |
| All B's (3.0) | 3.40 |
| All C's (2.0) | 3.20 |
To lift a 3.5 to 3.6 with straight A's, you would need about 15 more credits at that grade (same 60 completed credits assumed).
Frequently asked questions
What is a 3.5 GPA as a percentage?
On the standard 4.0 scale, a 3.5 GPA falls between B+ and A-, which works out to about 89.5%. There is no universal conversion, so schools and applications may use different cutoffs.
Is a 3.5 GPA an A or a B?
Neither exactly. It falls between B+ (3.3) and A- (3.7). Your individual courses carry letter grades; the 3.5 is the credit-weighted average of them.
Can I have a 3.5 GPA with a C on my record?
Yes. With equal credits, four A's, one B and one C average exactly 3.5. One lower grade can be offset by strong grades elsewhere.
Does a 3.5 GPA qualify for Latin honors?
At some schools, yes: Arizona, Ohio State and the University of Southern California set the cum laude floor at 3.5 cumulative. At others, such as the University of Washington, honors go to a top percentage of the class and the cutoff is far higher. Check your own school's policy.
